This longrifle is trimmed in a mixture of brass and iron, is stocked in curly maple, and features a .45 caliber straight octagon Kelly barrel. This rifle is a mixture of parts and styles, and represents a flint rifle later converted to percussion. This piece is signed on the top flat of the barrel P. Sheets. It is offered as used with a bright well maintained bore. Weight is 8.5 pounds and the trigger reach is 14" making this rifle well suited for the taller size shooter.

The .45 caliber 42" long straight 13/16" Kelly barrel is cut rifled with seven equal lands and grooves, the bore is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend our .440" pure lead round ball, patched with .018" ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. The barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown and is signed P. Sheets 35 just ahead of the rear sight. A browned iron blade front sight is dovetailed 2-1/4" behind the muzzle. A semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 12-3/4" ahead of the breech.

The curly maple stock is stained a medium brown and has a high gloss finish. The wide brass buttplate comb is decorated with five flats and a wedding band. The top view shows the straight tang and the bolt that passes through the stock to securely engage the triggerplate below, the rear is a wood screw. The brass patchbox door easily lifts open to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories.

The bottom view reveals the brass toeplate that helps to protect this critical area of the stock while loading. A browned iron triggerguard is surface mounted with two screws. The 3/8" diameter ramrod passes through two browned iron ramrod pipes and one matching entry pipe. We note the entry pipe stands proud of the wood. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 10-32 loading and cleaning accessories. A browned iron muzzle cap is installed to protect the end grain of the forearm. No cheek is formed on the buttstock. Two domed lock bolts pass through a browned iron sideplate that is inlet flush with the side panel.

The large Siler percussion lock is finished to match the barrel. It has a strong mainspring and functions as it should. A 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is fitted in the percussion drum and is surrounded with a brass flash cup to protect the stock from cap spray. The single lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked before or after setting the trigger. The single lever design requires the triggers to be set to fire the lock. We note the small trigger adjustment screw is missing.
